Lawndale Wood Handled Utility

Now comes the good stuff. I have never been able to find out what this beautiful glowing wood handle is made from. I have asked many wood people over time, never found out. But you can see how it glows. I’ve never seen anything like it. This ol’ boy is tough looking, hardy, and comes with a very early full tang all the way to the back of the knife. This would date back to the mid 1960’s. Special melt steel, never gave a high polish, Loveless always it was was just “dirty steel”. This it the large 5” utility. In later years for some reason Loveless refused to make a 5” utility. I was out there one year and a collector asked Bob if he would make him a 5” utility and Bob just flat said “No…. We don’t make that size here”. That was the end of the conversation no explanation , classic Bob always not doing what the collector wants. The rest of us would be out of business if we did a stunt like that. But the harder Bob made it to get a knife from him the more people around the world wanted it.

I am pretty sure you will never see anther one like this on the planet.

It is like a gun stock, you just can’t quit looking at the wood. Whomever buys this will own something that was 100% from the old man, and the most beautiful mystery wood. Early Steel, full tang, Lawndale, 5 inch blade. What else do you want. I meant just look at the blade, that is just ugly old crummy steel, but it looks so great on the early knives. The older knives can get by with this, as it makes them tough as a Junkyard Dog, and just as useful. The old steel with the brass guard and wood, this just speak volumes of having been around when Loveless was not a full time knife maker. He did not go full time until 1969. That is when he told his wife “We may starve…. But I’m going full time”. I asked Bob about the pins in the guard, and he said “ I hate to tell you , but I got nails from the hardware”.

You won’t find a more beautiful ugly knife on the planet. Look at the back of the handle, and the thong hole. I just love holding this knife and wondering about its real life.

With a knife like this you can use and still not hurt the value. That may make it priceless. But I was dumb enough to put a price on it. Take it home, live with it, admire it, as it a piece of history.
